The WELL Building Standard: A Deep Dive Into Light

The Light Concept in the WELL Building Standard focuses on opportunities to improve occupant experience through natural and electric lighting design and operational strategies. As more projects look to pursue WELL, understanding what is needed to comply with the design-focused strategies is a must for lighting designers, interior designers, architects, and sustainability consultants.

This interactive session will review the Light Concept in detail, including background into the details and reasoning of each Feature, and provide an opportunity to collaboratively work through examples.

About the speakers:

Kaitlyn Gillis (B.Eng (Bldg), M.Sc (Arch), M.Sc (Env Psyc), LEED AP O+M, WELL AP, WELL Faculty, Fitwel Ambassador)

Kaitlyn is a well-being and sustainability specialist with Stantec’s Sustainability and Buildings Performance team in Edmonton, Alberta. With a background in building engineering, deep green architecture, and environmental psychology Kaitlyn is able to understand both the social and technical sides of complex problems facing people and planet. Kaitlyn has researched and published on biophilic design and healthy buildings and currently serves as a WELL Faculty member with the International WELL Building Institute, where she enjoys spreading the word on the benefits of healthy buildings and the WELL Building Standard.

Ryan Benvenuto, BSc.Eng, LEED GA

Ryan is an Electrical EIT with Stantec’s Buildings Engineering team in Edmonton, Alberta. During his career, he has worked on a variety of projects ranging from healthcare, education, and commercial office buildings, as well as various renovation projects. At Stantec Ryan is responsible for designing multiple buildings systems including power, low tension, and fire alarm, but he is most passionate about lighting. Ryan currently serves on the IES Edmonton Section Committee as the Education Co-chair.
