IES District 6 Webinar: LEDs at End-of-Life

  • West Region, District 6, Section 79 Edmonton, AB Canada (map)

While there is a great deal of talk about sustainability, almost nobody is addressing the final stage of LED sustainability: end-of-life. The Department of Energy, seven-plus states, and 147 countries are banning fluorescent sales. Once again, the lighting industry is jumping forward with new technology for the sake of energy-efficiency and long life without a clear plan for end-of-life. Millions of LED exit signs, lamps, and luminaires are headed towards landfills. Jeff will explore lessons learned from the past, progress being made, and possible solutions for the future. This presentation will include updates from previous presentations and his article in LD&A.

Speaker: Jeffrey Schwartz, Member Emeritus IES

Mr. Schwartz has over 40 years’ experience as a consultant, lighting designer, and lighting distributor in the lighting industry. As a consultant, his clients have included the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a consultant to the ENERGY STAR lighting program, New York State Energy and Research Authority, and Energy Trust of Oregon. He has published over 40 articles, including several in LD&A. He is currently owner of JDS1 Consulting. Having been around at the early stages of LED lighting, he has some scary and fun facts to share.
